Hollywood superstar Ben Affleck says he was initially reluctant to play Batman in the forthcoming Man of Steel sequel.

Affleck has revealed he was not certain he was the right man to play the starring role in the Zack Synder film and was “reluctant” to accept it.

He told 411mania.com: “I felt I didn’t fit the traditional mold, but once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris [Nolan] and Christian [Bale] made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited.”

“Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations.”

The as yet untitled Batman movie also stars Henry Cavill as Superman and due to hit the big screen in July 2015, according to the Hollywood reporter.

The first scene for the new film, which has been touted as Batman vs Superman, was shot earlier this month at a college in Los Angeles.

The scene centered around a football match between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University, according to East Los Angeles College Campus News.

Playing Batman has always been a coveted role in Hollywood, with legends including Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and Christian Bale all making it their own.

Batman first appeared as a character in DC Comics in May 1939.

Batman is big business.

TV series and movies based on the comic book character have generated billions of dollars worth of revenue down the years.
