Bill and Ted-themed Halloween show "cancelled following claims it is insensitive to gay people"

A Bill and Ted-themed stage show at Universal Studios has been cancelled following criticism that it is insensitive to gay people.

‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure’ allegedly featured a scene in which Superman is depicted being sprinkled with fairy dust and turns into an “effeminate” character.

The production was part of Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights series which has been an annual event at the studios for for the past seven years.

In a statement posted on Wednesday on its website, Universal Studios Hollywood said: “After thoughtful consideration, Universal Studios Hollywood has made the decision to discontinue production of the Halloween Horror Nights’ ‘Bill & Ted’ show for the remainder of its limited run.”

Wilson Cruz, of GLAAD, formerly known as the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, told KTLA5: “They took Superman, this idea of masculinity, a man of steel, and someone comes in and throws what they called fairy dust on him which turned him into a very effeminate gay man and made him weak – so all of a sudden that’s supposed to be funny.

“This kind of easy humour just for laughs just doesn’t work anymore – and people are offended by that, including me.”
