David Beckham has launched a new academy aimed at supporting up and coming creative talent.

The Sky Academy will be based at Sky’s London studios and offer mentoring, scholarships and training for youngsters using the firm’s facilities.

Star names from the world of sport have been lined up to lend their support to the scheme which Sky claims will create opportunities for one million young people by 2020.

Speaking at the glitzy launch event for the Sky Academy in London tonight, Becks said “mentors and role models” had always been important to him throughout his life.

“When I was young, they helped me to believe in myself and gave me the confidence to follow my dreams,” he said.

“That’s what Sky Academy will do and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Becks has credited former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as being one of the key role models in his early life and career.

The Sky academy will give youngsters the chance to go behind the scenes at the Sky studios,.

“The academy will work to support up-and-coming talent and inspire under-25s across Britain and Ireland through a range of initiatives, such as providing role models from television, sport and the arts,” according to Sky News.

As the ambassador for the academy Beckham will lead a team including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Darren Campbell and dancer Ashley Banjo in helping to promote the project.
