The Craftivist Collective were asked by People and Planet to deliver 2 craftivism workshops with students from all over the UK in November 2009 as part of their ‘Shared Planet’ weekend conference in Manchester.
Shared Planet is the UK’s largest student conference on world poverty, human rights and the environment. It’s one weekend packed full of inspiring speakers, practical and informative workshops, debates, films, stalls and fun.
Shared Planet is open to all young people and students over 16 who want to find out about the worlds big problems and share the solutions. This year the event will be held at the University of Manchester
we had 2 90 minute sessions with 15 student in each (both sold out quicker than all the other sessions and we even had people sneak into the sessions because they wanted to attend)
we did a powerpoint presentation on what craftivism is, why we set up the Craftivist Collective, our manifesto and showed past project as well as ideas for future ones. we then watched our instructions video on how to make a mini protest banner then had 30 minutes to make them whilst chatting to each other around a big table. we ended with a chat about craftivism and how the session was. the feedback was awesome! and some students want to take our ideas back to their sixth forms and universities and set up craftivism sessions and projects. one girl even wants to write her Sociology degree dissertation on us!
we made 30 Mini Protest Banner kits; 15 on climate change and 15 on sweatshops.
contents:
Sweatshop kits included resources from the charity War on Want from their new campagin ‘Love Fashion Hate Sweatshops’. The kits included:
1 vinyl sticker
1 petition card (to fill in and have a photo petition taken with it
1 campaign badge
climate change kits included resource from Christian Aid’s ‘Countdown to Copenhagen’ campaign;
1 petition card
1 badge
1 fairtrade, organic cotten shoe lace
1 A6 flyer for the Wave demonstration 5th Dec
