A memorial to celebrate the life of the musician is being arranged in a chapel in Newington Green this Sunday
A memorial for the late Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed is currently being organised in a chapel in Newington Green, north London.
Musicians, artists and fans are expected to attend the event, which is called Wake on the Wild Side.
It has been billed as a celebration of the life of the musician, which will give people who have been inspired by his work the chance to pay tribute to the visionary star.
The memorial will be held in London’s famous Newington Green Unitarian Chapel, by atheist minister Andy Pakula.
On the event, he said: “This would be a very different world without Lou Reed. There are many people who feel a distinct need to say goodbye.
“This is an event intended for anyone and everyone whose life has been touched by his music and poetry, be they old rock stars, young musicians or just ordinary folk.”
The afternoon is being co-organised by journalist Stefan Simanowitz, who appealed for people to get involved.
“We welcome everyone who’d like to get involved with Wake on the Wild Side: musicians, technicians, artists or anyone who has been inspired, influenced or touched by Lou Reed’s music or poetry.”
He added: “Dress code on Sunday is optional but people are encouraged to dress on the wild side.”
It will take place on Sunday, November 3, from 3pm – 5pm at Newington Green Unitarian Chapel in London.
Tickets are free and are available on www.eventbrite.com but space is limited.
