Conrad Murray has been released from prison after serving half of his four-year sentence for causing Michael Jackson’s death.

He left the County jail under sheriff’s escort avoiding reporters and fans of Jackson on Monday [October 28].

The sheriff’s department are accused of showing favouritism to Murray by allowing the former doctor to leave through a back exit.

A spokesperson for the sheriff, Steve Whitmore, told CNN that Murray was driven away in a  car for the “safety and security” of the jail.

A handful of Jacko fans gathered outside the prison for Murray’s release and according to witnesses one was playing music from the King of Pop’s 1982 album Thriller.

Murray, 60, was released to his representatives and was described by Whitmore as “an exemplary inmate” who was kept away from the general inmate population.

It’s reported Murray was given liberal use of a telephone inside his cell during the final year before being released.

The release came under a California state plan to reduce prison overcrowding.

A jury concluded Murray’s negligence led to Jackson’s death when the singer died unexpectedly, aged 50, ahead of a comeback tour in 2009.

Murray was convicted of manslaughter in 2011 for administering a lethal dose of anaesthetic to the pop icon and received a maximum four-year penalty after a two-month trial.

The cardiologist was hired to serve as a personal doctor for Jackson’s This Is It tour in 2009 and told investigators he gave the singer nightly infusions of propofol to treat his insomnia.

Murray was accused of “playing Russian roulette with Michael Jackson’s life every single night” by Deputy District Attorney David Walgren.

Murray’s license to practise has since been suspended in California, Nevada and Texas.

His attorneys presented the case that Jackson had injected himself on the tragic night of his death.

”He’s prepared to keep fighting this as long as it takes,” Murray’s attorney Valerie Wass said ahead of her client’s release.
