The Killers play London: 8 things we learned from the band"s gig

The Killers played live in London on Wednesday night and their live set filled us with musical knowledge

There’s nothing like hearing The Killers pump out a few of their classics live at an intimate venue – here’s eight things we learned from their gig.

They love London

Lead singer Brandon Flowers was gushing with praise for London 10 years after they first played on our shores.

Stopping to thank the fans, he said “There’s something in the air tonight. We’ve been coming here for ten years, and you were the first ones to make us feel worth a damn – you gave us the confidence to go elsewhere.”

You can’t sit and watch them

Half of the crowd had seats. None of them were used once they stepped on stage.

You’ll know more Killers songs than you think

For a band who’ve never had a UK number one single and only ever had four singles make the top 10 (Mr.Brightside, Somebody Told Me, When You Were Young and Human) you’ll know a lot more of their songs than you think.

They’ll always play Mr. Brightside

And we are forever grateful for this. A decade on from it’s release in 2003 this feel good anthem is as good as it gets and it still makes for a perfect close to a gig.

The Hammersmith Apollo has a new name

We’re not entirely sure when it happened but don’t worry we managed to make it safely to the Eventim Apollo – as it’s now known. Rest assured it’s the same great venue but with newly upholstered seats.

Classic combinations always work

Small venue. Big songs. Perfect.

The last time The Killers played the UK in the summer they headlined at Wembley and before that played a headline slot at the Isle of Wight Festival but seeing them in a smaller more intimate venue was just as good if not better.

The new album has two new songs on it

Their new album ‘Direct Hits’ which is released on Monday is essentially a greatest hits album but does feature two new songs Just Another Girl and Shot At The Night which they opened the show with.

It took us ages to get a good picture

Ok, ok, we’ll be honest we struggled for an eight but it did take us an age to get a picture without the hands of the person a few rows in front in the frame.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will return to the big screen as the Olympic medallist Sebastian Coe in the forthcoming biopic Gold.

Based on Pat Butcher’s novel The Perfect Distance, the plot follows the athlete’s rivalry with fellow Olympian Steve Ovett in the run-up to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Lord Coe famously ran against Ovett and was victorious in the 1500m, while Ovett won gold in the 800m.

In Los Angeles in 1984, Coe won silver in the 800m and gold in the 1,500m. Meanwhile, Ovett was unable to offer competition due to respiratory problems.

Coe retired in 1991 and became a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party in 1992.

He became a Life Peer in 2000 and oversaw London’s Olympic games last year – and now resides in Australia.

The film is written by Slumdog Millionaire’s Simon Beaufoy and Will Davies, with fellow The Women in Black co-star James Watkins starring alongside Radcliffe.

Radcliffe recently played Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, directed by John Krokidas.

The film follows Ginsberg on his literary journey and sexual awakening in 1940s New York, within the intellectual circle that would become the Beat Generation.

Gold has been developed by BBC Films, the British Film Institute and AL Films. It is due to be shot in the UK and Russia in 2014.

Head of BBC Films Christine Langham, who is also the executive producer of the film, said: “Compelling, funny and moving, Gold is a gem of a story.”

Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy also sung Gold’s praises, saying that the film was a “brilliant story”.

He said: “I hadn’t realised how good it was until you dig into their past. They were fantastically different athletes and different people.”

Tom Hardy: Batman villain to play Rocket Man in Elton John biopic

Hardy – who played Batman’s muscular enemy Bane in The Dark Knight Rises – will need to use all of his versatility to take on this new role

Batman actor Tom Hardy is to play Elton John in a biopic of the pop legend’s life.

Hardy – who found fame playing Batman’s muscular enemy Bane in The Dark Knight Rises – will need to use all of his considerable versatility as a character actor to take on this new role.

The 36-year-old, who has also played tough characters such as the notorious British criminal Charles Bronson in the past, is due to begin filming for the Elton John biopic late next year.

The 66-year-old singer is an executive producer for the film Rocketman, which will tell his story, from his childhood to his rise to fame.

The legendary performer is believed to be due to re-record some of his biggest hits for the film which will be directed by Michael Gracey.

Academy Award nominee Lee Hall (War Horse) is reportedly responsible for the screenplay, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Hardy, who is becoming known as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, will next be seen in Steve Knight’s “Locke” and in the next “Mad Max” franchise.

Young volleyball player "honoured" to play with Kate

19 OCTOBER 2013 Kate Middleton certainly impressed the young athletes she met on Friday during her visit to the Copper Box venue inside the former Olympic Park.

One of the volleyball players who Kate joined for a quick game was particularly taken with the Duchess.

“She did really well and picked up the sport really quickly,” said 16-year-old Grace Lazard. “I just feel really privileged and honoured to have played with her.”

“She was playing in heels, whoever plays in heels is amazing,” added the promising volleyball star who had played in an international tournament in Denmark earlier this week.

The new mum herself acknowledged that her footwear wasn’t the most appropriate.

“I must remember to bring my trainers next time,” Kate told SportAid’s Chief Executive Tim Lawler, “This is great fun.”

After her impromptu game of volleyball Prince William‘s wife then talked to teenagers taking part in the other sports before she was visiting various sessions where the promising athletes were given coaching in other aspects of their career.

Kate became patron of SportsAid this year.

The charity has provided invaluable help to some of the UK’s top athletes Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Tom Daley,David Weir and Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds.
