Christening mug sparks the Prince George effect

28 OCTOBER 2013 The ‘Prince George effect’ is taking hold. A commemorative mug sold in Kate Middleton‘s hometown of Bucklebury has created a frenzy as fans rush to invest in a slice of history.

“It is a collectors item, we commissioned only 500 and just have a few left. The mug has been sold all around the world,” Lynda Tillotson, a Middleton family friend who runs L Interiors, told HELLO! Online.

“The mug came about because I had not produced anything here in my Interior Shop in Bucklebury for the wedding and we had visitors from all around the globe upon us and I had nothing to offer them,” she added.

 

The £19.95 mug, which was specially designed by Doris & Co in collaboration with the Berkshire interiors shop, features a crowned acorn and the words “From Small Acorns” with the year 2013 etched alongside.

“The Avenue of Oaks is very important here in Bucklebury because it is so ancient, originally planted for Queen Elizabeth the 1st visit to Bucklebury,” Lynda said. ”Kate has spent most of her formative years living on The Avenue and as you can see has incorporated the Acorn into the family crest.”

The news of the mug selling out comes in the wake of William and Kate releasing an adorable image of them with their three-month-old son on the day of his christening.

The personal photo shows the new parents looking down lovingly at their contented little Prince as he beams back at them.

Twitter was aflutter on Saturday evening as the fifth snapshot from the christening was released with royal watchers marvelling at the picture-perfect young family.

Since his birth on 22 July, the future King has become a true trendsetter despite the public only having seen photos of him on three occasions.

The bird-print wrap by aden + anais which he was wrapped in while in his car seat as he left the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital flew off the shelves.

It wasn’t just the cute wrap that sparked a shopping whirl — the little Prince’s very first ‘outfit’ also benefitted from the endorsement.

Appearing on the steps of the Lindo Wing with his proud parents, the newborn was presented to the world in a white shawl by GH Hurt & Son in Nottingham, the same company that made William’s blanket 31 years ago, and reportedly also that used for Prince Charles in 1948.

Shortly after the royal birth, company director Gillian Taylor admitted the firm were struggling to cope with the demand.

Prince George given quirky christening gifts

26 OCTOBER 2013 It’s not every day that a future monarch is christened and so in honour of his special day Prince George of Cambridge has received some rather unique gifts.

George’s aunty, Pippa Middleton, reportedly splashed out £7000 to give her first nephew a bespoke present that will last a lifetime.

Pippa is said to have visited Wrightson and Platt, a company who make silver casts of a baby’s hands and feet which are then engraved with their name and date of birth.

 

One of George’s more obscure gifts was given to him by Count Tibor Kalnoky who is a friend of Prince Charles and manages his estates in the Romanian region of Transylvania.

According to the Telegraph The Count has given George his own field of wild flowers in the Transylvanian hills.

“If we sent him flowers, they would wilt,” said Count Talnoky, who was present when Prince William married Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey. “So this is a symbolic gift.”

“Wild flowers are fragile like new-born babies,” he added. “This gift will protect this area and contribute to raising public awareness, so that rare flowers can be protected.”

Ten facts about George"s magnificent christening

25 OCTOBER 2013 Prince George‘s christening was a careful balancing act between the old and new. Just as they have done in the past Prince William and Kate chose to respect tradition while bringing in their own personal touches.

Here are ten facts on how they managed it.

1. Prince George was baptised with the 17in-high silver gilt Lily Font, made for Queen Victoria’s children, which is usually kept under guard with the Crown Jewels.

2. Water from the Jordan, where Christ was baptised by John the Baptist, was used. The archbishop made the sign of the cross and trickled water on his head three times to symbolise the Holy Trinity.

 

3. Baby George wore a replica of the royal family’s 172-year-old robe.

4. The Duke and Duchess chose the hymns Breathe on Me, Breath of God and Be Thou My Vision. The latter was sung at the memorial service for the 10th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

5. The venue – the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace – also paid a subtle tribute to William’s late mother. It was here that her coffin lay at rest on the eve of her funeral in 1997. Previous members of the family have been baptised at Buckingham Palace.

6. Proud mum Kate wore Alexander McQueen, the same label that created her wedding gown.

 

7. The official photos brought together four generations of the royal family in the same image – the first time this has happened since 1894 when 80-year-old Queen Victoria posed with three of her heirs.

8. The Cabinet’s christening gift to Prince George was a hand-crafted pine toy box made by Hibba Toys UK of Leeds. Ministers also made a charitable donation to the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

9. The Queen wore a brooch to the christening given to her by her parents, George VI and the Queen Mother, which marked the birth of Prince Charles in 1948. The brooch, made of rubies, diamonds and sapphires, is in the shape of a basket of flowers.

10. As godparents Willliam and Kate chose one relative, his cousin Zara Phillips, three personal friends of theirs from childhood or university, a trusted aide, and two family friends with connections to Princess Diana.

This is a complete break with tradition as in the past a future King would have had other royals, often from foreign countries, and aristocrats as mentors.

23 OCTOBER 2013 Pippa Middleton was every inch the stylish auntie as she attended her nephew Prince George’s christening.

The brunette beauty wore a cream wool trapeze coat with pink blush trim and oyster silk lining over a blush lace Paris dress by couturier Suzannah Crabb.

She accessorised with a hand-dyed and beaded corsage pillbox hat in blush by British milliner Edwina Ibbotson, shoes by Emmy and a blush pink clutch bag. The items were all also purchased from Suzannah’s boutique.

Pippa has long been a fan of Suzannah’s clothing – she wore an emerald silk crepe de chine dress by the designer for a wedding back in 2011.

 

Speaking to the Daily Mail after her appearance, Suzannah said that Pippa “phones first but just turns up on her own”, revealing that she always pays full price and never borrows items or asks for a discount.

A-list photographer tipped to capture christening

21 OCTOBER 2013 Hollywood photographer Jason Bell is rumoured to have been comsssioned by Prince William and Kate Middleton to take Prince George‘s official christening pictures on Wednesday.

Oxford-educated Jason, who has photographed A-list celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, David Beckham and Kate Winslet, is soon expected to confirm his role at the historic royal occasion.

As well as appearing in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, many of 44-year-old Jason’s photographs hang in the National Portrait Gallery, of which the Duchess of Cambridge is patron.

 

Jason is also the man behind movie posters such as Love Actually, Billy Elliot and Bridget Jones 2: The Edge of Reason.

Whoever William and Kate choose as the official photographer will be one of only a small number of people at Prince George’s christening as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have decided that the event will be an intimate family affair.

“We are not giving details of the guest list at this stage,” the couple’s spokesperson said at the beginning of the month. “All we are saying is that it will be a small intimate affair with close family and others, which include godparents.”

 

One photographer who was thought to be in the running to capture Prince George’s big day is 66-year-old John Swannell, who took the official portraits for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

However John suggested that he had not been given the position when he recently spoke to The Sunday Times.

“I believe they have gone for someone younger,” said John. “And perhaps more modern.”

Further details of George"s christening revealed

16 OCTOBER 2013 With a week to go until Prince George‘s christening, further details of the ceremony have been revealed.

The little royal will be baptised by The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby at 3pm on 23 October.

The service, which will be held at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace, will last approximately 45 minutes.

 

Last week Prince William and Kate Middleton hinted at what kind of ceremony they will be hosting for their baby boy.

“We are not giving details of the guest list at this stage,” the couple’s spokesperson said. “All we are saying is that it will be a small intimate affair with close family and others, which include godparents.”

It is thought that senior members of the royal family and the Middletons will be present at the ceremony which will take place at the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace.

 

Shortly after George’s grand entrance into the world, aides said there was no royal protocol that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had to follow for the occasion.

In the past, royal babies including Prince William have been christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace, with only close family, godparents and friends in attendance.

The last member of the family to be christened in St James’s Palace was William’s cousin Princess Beatrice in December 1988.

 

No details have yet been announced of George’s godparents, but it’s thought he will have six.

Among those tipped for the honour are Pippa Middleton, Prince Harry, William’s best friend Thomas van Straubenzee, former private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, ex-nanny Tiggy Pettifer née Legge-Bourke, and Kate’s Marlborough friend Alicia Fox-Pitt.

Hugh van Cutsem – whose father recently passed away – is also in the running. His daughter Grace was a bridesmaid when the Duke and Duchess tied the knot, and the little girl is also William’s goddaughter, making it all the more likely he’ll return the favour.

William’s good friend Guy Pelly recently denied rumours that he had been chosen as one of George’s godparents.

The nightclub entrepreneur explained to the Daily Mail, “People have been coming up to me and shaking my hand offering their congratulations all week.

“It’s been weird. I’ve had to explain to everyone that I am not going to be a godfather. They have got it all wrong.

“I spoke to William yesterday about it and he confirmed I am not going to be one. And I want to set the record straight.

Guy continued, “William wasn’t annoyed about people getting it wrong, just quite matter-of-fact that it should be put right.”
